Team Roger – A Tribute to My Father
Introduction
This project was deeply personal to me, created in honor of my father, Roger Sims, as he battled colon cancer. The Team Roger logo was designed to show support for him, raise awareness, and bring together family, friends, and supporters in his fight. My dad passed away on May 3, 2024, after a two-year battle with cancer, making this project even more meaningful as a lasting tribute to his legacy.
Roger the Cancer Bear: Viking Theme
The first version, Roger the Cancer Bear, drew inspiration from Viking symbolism, representing my dad’s strength, resilience, and warrior spirit in his fight against cancer. This design aligned with the Viking aesthetics of Bear Den Forge, reinforcing his connection to our shared love of craftsmanship and heritage.
Jolly Roger: Pirate Theme
The second iteration, the Jolly Roger, embraced a pirate theme, a direct nod to my dad’s lifelong love for pirates and adventure. This version featured classic pirate elements, such as a skull, crossed bones, and a bandana, symbolizing his bold and fearless personality. It was a way to celebrate what he loved and keep his passions alive.
The final version of the Team Roger logo took inspiration from soccer badges, representing both my father’s and my shared love for Real Salt Lake and the sport itself. This design incorporated:
A Moose Mascot – Representing my dad, inspired by the cartoon moose he had drawn for me since I was a kid.
Colon Cancer Awareness Blue – Honoring the fight he fought so bravely.
"Tutti per Uno" Motto – Italian for "All for One," recognizing his two-year religious mission in Italy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and emphasizing the unity and support behind Team Roger.
This project was more than just a design—it was a way for me to honor my dad, celebrate his life, and create a lasting legacy that brings awareness to colon cancer. Team Roger lives on, and his fight continues in the love and support he inspired.
